Brothers and Sisters - I love the Saturday evening session of conference, thank you for being here. I'm especially thankful for the young people that are here - the First Presidency in a letter to the Stake President invited you to participate in this meeting. In that same letter they also asked us to talk about "Hastening the Work of Salvation" - this is a phrase that is becoming very familiar to the members of the church. The church has even set up a web site under that same name. But, what does that mean?

According to Webster dictionary -  to Hasten means,

: to cause (something) to happen more quickly
: to move or act quickly

I think most of us know what the Work of Salvation is.

Moses 1: 39

For behold, this is my work and my glory -- to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

God's work and glory is to help us become as he is and regain his presence. To obtain that level of exaltation - there are multiple steps, lessons and promises that we need to make or fulfill in order to obtain that reward. These promises are called covenants.

All of us in this room have made promises and covenants with our loving and wonderful Father in Heaven. We all should remember the covenants we made in the waters of baptism - and that we renew each week as we partake of the sacrament. We promise to take upon us His name, to always remember him, keep his commandments, bare another's burdens that they may be light.

All these covenants are two way promises - and The Lord  in return has promised to forgive us of our sins, to give us the Gift of the Holy Ghost and promises us that if we live righteously that he will always have His spirit to be with us.

Ancient and modern Prophets have also told us that there are other promises and covenants we have made that we don't remember.

Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Brothers and sisters - All of us have a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father, before we came to this earth we made promises and covenants with him - can you envision your time of sanctification and ordination under the hands, or the direction of your loving Father in Heaven as you were about to leave his presence and come to this earth to learn and be tested. I imagine that most of us were a little scared or apprehensive, but I'm also sure we were excited to finally have our turn or opportunity to come to the earth. All of us, had already proved ourselves worthy and faithful to receive this opportunity and then to be blessed enough to have the gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives. I'm sure we each promised him we would do what ever we could to return to his presence and I'm sure he reassured us that he would give us every possible opportunity to pass the tests we would be asked to accomplish.

I would envision a loving hug and kiss as any parent would give their child as they are leaving on a long journey.

This is similar to a family sending one of their children on a mission - yes we are all sad and going to miss them, but we know that the experiences they are about to undertake will be worth the time apart.  Then when that time is done - what a great and wonderful event happens as we see them coming down the escalators at the airport. Tears are shed - hugs and expressions of excitement and love are shared. Then shortly it's as if they had never left our presence and they are just a better version of those with whom we have always loved and cherished.

I'm order for us to become the person we need to be - we need to remember or understand who we are and where we come from. We are children of a loving "Eternal Father in Heaven." Indeed our prayer should be that he will "lead us, guide us, walk beside us, help us find the way - teach us all that we should do to live with him someday."

Then we need to get back to the reality at hand - all of us have difficulties and hardships, all of us make mistakes and get discouraged or depressed. All of us need the Atonement of the Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ in our lives.

Speaking to the youth of the church - Elder Quentin L. Cook said:

"In my view, those of you in the rising generation are better prepared than any previous generation. Your knowledge of the scriptures is particularly impressive. However, the challenges your generation faces as you prepare for service are similar to those faced by all members of the Church. We are all aware the culture in most of the world is not conducive to righteousness or spiritual commitment....."

All of us would agree that the culture of the world in general is not in keeping with the principles of righteousness, indeed the natural man is an enemy to God. We can not allow ourselves to be fooled into believing the lie - that if it is widely accepted or popular that it must be OK.

Elder Cook continued:

"Local leaders across the world report that when viewed as a whole, Church members, especially our youth, have never been stronger. But they almost always raise two concerns: first, the challenge of increased unrighteousness in the world and, second, the apathy and lack of commitment of some members. They seek counsel about how to help members to follow the Savior and achieve a deep and lasting conversion."

The Lord has saved the strongest of his spirits for this the last dispensation - we have been prepared and will be given all the information and assistance needed to accomplish the work we have been sent here too do. The second area that of apathy - sadly there isn't a soul here tonight that doesn't occasionally get a little lazy in our responsibilities. But what we do and how prepared we are - will dictate our actions and our possible return to our heavenly home.

In Matt 25: the Lord uses the parable of the Ten Virgins to bring this point to light. All ten know who the bride groom is - they all have committed to wait for his coming - The Lord uses the term virgins showing that they are basically righteous and a covenant making people. They have been told that he is coming and what they need to do in order to be prepared. But, despite these facts when the Savior finally did come they didn't have sufficient oil necessary to joint the wedding party. Then they tried to hurry and take care of the things that needed to be done - but it was too late.

Brothers and sisters - the question I would like to ask is what does The Lord mean NOW as he is asking us to "Hasten the Work of Salvation."  No matter what level of spirituality we currently have achieved - we are being asked to hasten or quicken our pace and dedication. We all know the areas that we need to work on - and as we go forward The Lord will help us understand what else we need to do.

Our Prophet has asked us to "Hasten the Work" in a number of areas - 1) Missionary work or taking the gospel to those that have not had the chance to accept it. - 2) Retention, we need to show love and concern for those that have recently started to make covenants and started on the path to exaltation. - 3) Activation and Fellowshipping, to help those that have either lost their way or who are apathetic to the covenants and promises they have made. - 4) Finding and redeeming those that have gone before us, genealogy and temple work for those beyond the vail. - 5) Teaching the saving principle of the Gospel of Christ. This is done at home and when ever possible to all of Gods children.

None of these five areas are new - or something we haven't been asked to do before. But now there is an urgency, is that urgency because the bridegroom is approaching or is it because we can't be apathetic any longer and be able to understand the teachings of a changing world and what God would like us too know. The answer to both of those questions is yes - we are the Holders of the Priesthood of God - we are his covenant people. He is asking us to be closer to the spirit and as we take upon us his name we need to be beacon or light to those who are looking for truth and righteousness, whom ever or wherever they may be.

As we hasten the work of Salvation, there will be times that those around us, perhaps even those that we love and cherish, will reject our message, argue and even persecute us for following the principles of righteousness. Even though its hard to do, the Savior continued to administer too and love his enemies.

Brothers and sisters, we need to understand that the fight between good and evil is real. Satan desires nothing more than to destroy your happiness and possible exaltation - he wants us to be miserable like he is. We are in a war for not only our salvation, but the salvation of all of God's children.

To help us understand this concept I would like to use an analogy from the scriptures that we have heard multiple times -

Please envision that you are walking down a long hall, at the end of that hall is the tree of life, the love of God, the ultimate goal - on each side of you are individuals or circumstances that trying to temp you or bring you down. In the scriptures they liken unto the fiery dart of the wicked. When we are hit by one of these darts - it drains us of our strength - it paralyzes our ability to receive guidance or help from our Heavenly Father. The more we are hit - it not only slows our progress, but eventually stops us.

We have the ability to pull those dart out - that is the process of repentance. But they will continue to be thrown at us at a greater pace the further we go down the hall.

We need to protect ourselves before the darts have a chance to hit us. In Eph. Chapter 6, the Apostle Paul talked about that preparation as putting on the Armor of God.

-  Girting our Loins with truth
-  Breastplate of righteousness
-  Feet shod with preparation
-  Shield of faith
-  Helmet of Salvation

These things will shield us that the darts cannot pierce us. Then he says we must have -

-  Sword of the Spirit - Word of God.

The Sword is different than the other pieces, it is not only used to shield - but can be used as a weapon to fight against the evil we encounter.  Even with the armor - we cannot complacently stroll through life, we need to fight for truth and righteousness.

D & C 27:

Wherefore, lift up your hearts and rejoice, and gird up your loins, and take upon you my whole armor, that ye may be able to withstand the evil day, having done all, that ye may be able to stand.....

 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of my Spirit, which I will pour out upon you, and my word which I reveal unto you, and be agreed as touching all things whatsoever ye ask of me, and be faithful until I come, and ye shall be caught up, that where I am ye shall be also. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters - I testify that without the preparation and the Armor of continual righteousness, truth, and the guidance of the spirit and living prophets - we will not make it to the end of the hall. Satan's influence poisons our resolve, it weakens our ability to know the will of God - replacing it will apathy, complacency and thinking the thing of righteousness really aren't that important.

Now is the time for us to "hasten" our resolve - to do what ever we need to do to get ourselves, our family and all of God's children to partake of the love and happiness the gospel brings.

I’m the missionary portion of the program – apparently when the return missionaries run out they ask auxiliary leaders to fill in the void. Of course they didn’t tell me that when called me to be an auxiliary leader.

Last week the stake leaders were invited to attend the Crockett Ward for their ward conference. This year’s theme is enduring to the end. Bishop Akina in his remarks quoted a scripture that like happens too many of us were so familiar I knew instantly where it was. It is so failure to me that in my mind I began to quote the words from the two verses being read. But then something happened – he began to apply the scripture in an area that it had never crossed my mind that this scripture would apply.

Instantly the spirit began to flow and testified to me of the great lesson that I was learning – as it applied to a problem that has been pestering me for some time. The problem has not disappeared nor will it be easy to rectify, but I came away with a new outlook and vision on some of the things I need to do on my part.

I remember many years ago as a missionary in New Mexico tracking and meeting so many people who were confused on the questions of where we came from. Why we are here? And where we are going after this life? These are some of the basics of the plan of salvation. And superficially almost everyone in this room would be able to answer these questions.

The problem many of us have is that despite the fact we know why we are here – at times we lack the faith to trust in the Lord that He will guide and protect us in our times of need. Do we believe the Lord is leading us and giving us the opportunities necessary to progress?

Elder Eyring – CES Fireside 5/6/01

“Your life is carefully watched over as was mine. The Lord knows both what he will need you to do, and what you will need to know. He is kind and He is all knowing. So you can expect with confidence that He has prepared opportunities for you to learn in preparation for the service you will give. You will not recognize those opportunities perfectly, as I did not. But, when you put the spiritual things first in your life you will be blessed, to feel directed toward certain learning and you’ll be motivated to work harder. You will then recognize later that your power to serve was increased and you will be grateful. Your service may not be in what the world would recognize as a lofty calling. When the real value of service become clear in the judgment of God. Some people who worked in quiet anonymity will be the real hero’s. Many of them, perhaps most of them will be the underpaid, under recognized people, who nurtured others.”

The key to this quote is that “when you put the spiritual things first in your life you will be blessed.” I love when a prophet of God makes a promise – because whether by his own voice or the voice of his servants it is the same.

Ether 3: 11-12

And the lord said unto him: Believest thou the words which I shall speak?

And he answered: Yea, Lord, I know that thou art

a God of truth, and canst not lie.

As Elder Eyring stated: you can be confident the Lord is preparing circumstances designed for your special needs – he knows what you need to know and have. Many wonder where God is or if he has abandoned them in their times of need. Others question if there is a God – if there was how he could allow so many things happen to his innocent children.

An experience that testifies of this guiding and preparation began for me more than 25 years ago as a missionary –

- transfer – middle of the month, area with problems

- cleaning up area, know things very few would ever know

- as Bishop 18 years latter, comment made to a few ward members in passing –

- women in group made a comment to see if I knew a situation happening in that area

- when she told someone they didn’t believe her

The Lord began to prepare away for her to feel clean and find peace 18 years in advance – why so long? Why in this manor? Are questions I’m unable to answer.

Elder Bednar – Quorum of the Twelve, in our last general conference called these the tender mercies of God.

1 Nephi 1: 20

But behold, I, Nephi , will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith , to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.

Elder Bebnar –

“The Lord’s tender mercies are very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving kindnesses, consolation, support, spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ. Truly the Lord suits his mercies according to the conditions of the children of men.”

Those tender mercies so many times come through the kindness and love of a neighbor, friend and even a stranger that has no idea the impact or the service they have rendered.

As Elder Eyring stated: “real hero’s – most of them will be the underpaid under recognized people who nurture others.” What a great blessing it is to be worthy or able to be an instrument in the hand of the All Mighty – to bless another’s life.

All of us have experienced events or times in our lives when in hind sight we can recognize a power or series of blessings that are not mere coincidences, but if humbly evaluated can only be attributed to divine intervention. But all of us have also had times when we may ask why we have been abandoned.

Such a time happen for the Prophet Joseph Smith – in the Liberty Jail. This is possibly one of the hardest times of his life. In section 121 of the D&C he pleads with the Lord.

1) O God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place?

2) How long shall thy hand be stayed, and thine eye, yea thy pure eye, behold from the eternal heavens the wrongs of thy people and of thy servants, and thine ear be penetrated with their cries?

3) Yea, O Lord, how long shall they suffer these wrongs and unlawful oppressions, before thine heart shall be softened toward them, and thy bowels be moved with compassion toward them?

Then in verse 7 the Lord begins his answer –

7) My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment;

8) And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes.

His answers continues from sec. 121 –sec.123.

Then in his time of trail the last verse the Lord gives states:

Therefore , dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

It’s our responsibility to do everything that is possibly in our power and also to live worthily in order to receive the salvation of the Lord. Then we can with assurance call upon the arm of the Lord for assistance. Then in the Lords time and for our eternal good the “Almighty will pour down knowledge from heaven upon the heads of the righteous.”

In the church and in this congregation there are a number of people that are struggling with their testimonies or with a major difficulty in their lives. Many of us have become complacent and thinking all is well and make little or no effort to strengthen our testimonies.

This complacency is like the 10 virgins, talked about in the New Testament by the Savior. They all knew who the bride groom was and that he was going to come – but half didn’t have sufficient oil in their lamps.

Elder Neil A Maxwell used the analogy of sins being like stones or boulders – he stated that many members of the church are unable to push boulders or large sins from their path because they are slipping and sliding on the pebbles beneath their feet.

The preparation of removing the pebbles and boulders of sin and having sufficient oil in our lamps are the same –

Omni 1: 26

And now, my beloved brethren, I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his resurrection,. Yea come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved.

It’s to come unto Christ, offer your whole soul unto him – his will and purpose become more important then yours. This is done by repenting and act like He acts. I think many of us have a hard time offering our whole soul to God – we continue to hold on tight to our favorite sins or vices.

This past year a young man that is very dear to me has been excommunicated from the church because of his addiction to pornography. For many years his problem was unnoticed by his family and friends – but the hidden addiction started to consume his soul and surfaced in some actions that were unacceptable to God and society. He then faced losing everything that was important to him – his membership in the church and his small family.

When we offer our souls to the Savior, nor only does he show us our weaknesses but he helps us overcome them.

Ether 12:27

And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness, I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

Brothers and sisters it's a pleasure to be here today. My enthusiasm is accelerated by the fact that it is the Christmas season. I love Christmas - I love the songs that we sing in church every December - the spirit of giving and reaching out to express our love and appreciation for our family and friends whom we love. Those that have the Spirit of Christ or Christmas don't stop with just those with whom they love - but reach out to all those in need no matter their situation.

But as with everything that is wonderful and good, Satan tries to manipulate the events around Christmas and influence us to be selfish, greedy and forget the reason we should be celebrating in the first place. The majority of references of Christmas in the media and entertainment - are not Christ centered. Advertisements and many programs concentrate on the need for expensive trinkets and self-filling gratification. How he does this and his purposes aren't the topic of my remarks today - and are obvious to all of us.  Instead I would like to talk about the wondrous plan, life and sacrifice of our Savior and Redeemer - even Jesus the Christ.

In our heavenly home we rejoiced as our Father laid out His eternal plan of salvation. All of his children would have the opportunity to come to earth and receive a physical body and to prove themselves worthy to become as He is and receive Eternal Life and Exaltation. During this time we would be tried and tested - we would be free to choose what path we would follow. Each of us were given the light of Christ as our guide - and the promise of receiving additional light, knowledge and wisdom as we live righteously and seek the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

Many of us as members of the church mistakenly take this promise for granted. The Savior to the Prophet Joseph Smith stated: For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it-- Others that may have found it, are like those in Lehi's dream, And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost. Still others are like the foolish virgins that know the bridegroom is coming, but through laziness or complacency just didn't take the time to fill their lamps with the needed oil or righteousness.

No matter which group we fall into - we need the knowledge and wisdom of God to forge our ways through difficulties, sorrow and pain to return back to our heavenly home. We were told that all of us would make mistakes and fall short on occasion. But there would be a way set up for us to get back on track and accomplish the task we were about to undertake. But because of the demands of justice - the price for our sins and mistakes needed to be paid. A Savior - redeemer - someone needed to pay the debt. Two of Gods spirits stepped forward -

One was willing to take that role, but only if he received the glory and honor - his plan would take away the agency of man and force us to remain faithful, but he assured us that no one would be lost in the process. He then would receive the honor and glory to himself, he thought to put himself before God.  But then our older brother - faithful and obedient, offered his life to fulfill the plan of our Eternal Heavenly Father. And one answered like unto the Son of Man said Here am I, send me.  (Abraham 3:27). He would pay the price - open the gate - make a way possible for our return. Fulfilling his fathers will - the only plan that would truly work.

16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;

17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;

18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit--and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink--

19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.
(D&C 19:16-19)

Brothers and sisters - our responsibility is to live by his conditions - repent of our sins and accept His Atoning sacrifice that has been offered.

Elder Bruce R McConkie stated -

"His atonement is the most transcendent event that ever has or ever will occur from Creation’s dawn through all the ages of a never-ending eternity.

It is the supreme act of goodness and grace that only a god could perform. Through it, all of the terms and conditions of the Father’s eternal plan of salvation became operative.

Through it are brought to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. Through it, all men are saved from death, hell, the devil, and endless torment.

And through it, all who believe and obey the glorious gospel of God, all who are true and faithful and overcome the world, all who suffer for Christ and his word, all who are chastened and scourged in the Cause of him whose we are—all shall become as their Maker and sit with him on his throne and reign with him forever in everlasting glory."(End quote)

Moments ago we partook of the Sacrament - renewing the covenant that we make in the waters of baptism. Taking upon us the name of Christ - promising to always remember him - keep his commandment - bare one another burdens that they may be light. Indeed we are promising to live the true principles of Christmas everyday of our lives. We all promised to accept his conditions to receive the promised blessing or reward.

It was the implementation of this plan that made the birth of the Savior such a wonderful event and why we still celebrate it today. Every prophet that ever lived had foretold of his birth and the signs that would accompany it. It was such a wondrous event that angels of God announced it to the shepherds watching their sheep - heavenly choirs sang his praises from the heavens above. A new star appeared in the heavens.

Perhaps Isaiah stated it best when penned the poetic verse.

6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Amidst the turmoil of bondage and sin - a Eternal King and Savior came into the world, bringing with him the mission and capacity to free all mankind from eternal pain and damnation. Indeed he is the Prince of Peace - his gospel is the only way we can obtain true peace and happiness.  He answered the ends of the law - he paid the price, and as I read a moment ago he suffered incomprehensible pain that caused himself to bleed from every pore.

Isaiah stated it well:

4 ¶Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

It is the supreme act of goodness and grace that only a god could perform. Through it, all of the terms and conditions of the Father’s eternal plan of salvation became operative.

Through it are brought to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. Through it, all men are saved from death, hell, the devil, and endless torment.

And through it, all who believe and obey the glorious gospel of God, all who are true and faithful and overcome the world, all who suffer for Christ and his word, all who are chastened and scourged in the Cause of him whose we are—all shall become as their Maker and sit with him on his throne and reign with him forever in everlasting glory."(End quote)

Moments ago we partook of the Sacrament - renewing the covenant that we make in the waters of baptism. Taking upon us the name of Christ - promising to always remember him - keep his commandment - bare one another burdens that they may be light. Indeed we are promising to live the true principles of Christmas everyday of our lives. We all promised to accept his conditions to receive the promised blessing or reward.

It was the implementation of this plan that made the birth of the Savior such a wonderful event and why we still celebrate it today. Every prophet that ever lived had foretold of his birth and the signs that would accompany it. It was such a wondrous event that angels of God announced it to the shepherds watching their sheep - heavenly choirs sang his praises from the heavens above. A new star appeared in the heavens.

Perhaps Isaiah stated it best when penned the poetic verse.

6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Amidst the turmoil of bondage and sin - a Eternal King and Savior came into the world, bringing with him the mission and capacity to free all mankind from eternal pain and damnation. Indeed he is the Prince of Peace - his gospel is the only way we can obtain true peace and happiness.  He answered the ends of the law - he paid the price, and as I read a moment ago he suffered incomprehensible pain that caused himself to bleed from every pore.

Isaiah stated it well:

4 ¶Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. (Isaiah 53:4-7)

How could such an event be physically possible - indeed he was a perfect being - a literal son of God in the flesh. We know that a angel from on high was sent to comfort and strengthen him. But it is still incomprehensible - another thing that helped him -  Isaiah mentioned a couple of verses later: "when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed," (Isaiah 53:10)

During his great atoning sacrifice he was able to see all of those whom would accept this great gift. He saw your face and mine. As he suffered every pain, infirmity and sorrow known to man he saw his seed. How else would he understand what it is that we are going through - as we languish in sin, pain and difficulty. Isn't it great to know that there is someone that has gone through it before us and understands our pain. He knows the answer to what can be done to receive the peace and happiness we need.
He has already paid the price for the redemption and relief we so desperately seek.

No wonder the heavens sang for joy when the time had come for his mission to begin. His selfless love and obedience had always been evident from his defense of the plan in the first place. All of us were given the option to follow him at that time and we have renewed that covenant to do so again when the sacrament was pasted.

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - we give and receive gifts, just like the wiseman brought to the baby and his family. Over time true believers and the world has created symbols and traditions that most of us enjoy with our families and friends.  
But the greatest symbols of Christianity are in the lives of those that follow his teachings and know him personally as they have sought his spirit and redeeming love. Have thankfully made the atonement a part of their lives.

He has told us that if you love me keep my commandment - or if you have done it unto the least of these my brethren you have done it unto me.

On one occasion an inquiring lawyer came to the Savior and asked, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” The Savior responded, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”

How do we demonstrate to our Heavenly Father that we love Him? Many years ago there was a popular song that said: “It’s easy to say I love you, easy to say I’ll be true; easy to say these foolish things, but prove it by the things you do.” We have a responsibility to prove to our Heavenly Father, by the things we do, that we love Him.

In short, we need to extend ourselves in service to our Heavenly Father if we are to demonstrate our love for Him.

It's a pleasure to be with you here this evening. As I was contemplating what I would talk about - - this week I have been reminded of some of my weaknesses and shortcomings. This remembering can be a humbling or difficult experience.  When I'm feeling sorry for myself - or throwing a pity party, I'm reminded of what was told to the Prophet Joseph Smith in the Liberty Jail -    The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?  This kinds of puts my difficulties in a little better perspective - I haven't suffered a fraction of what Joseph Smith suffered let alone the Savior. We have been told. That these challenges are given to us to help us grow- But despite these faults, as I look back over my life, it's obvious that I have been guided, directed, uplifted at every turn, challenge or difficulty that I have faced. But because I am weak - I continue  to question my future - harbor feelings of fear and discouragement over what may be around the next corner? Occasionally I continue to beat myself up because of mistakes and sins that have long been forgiven, or over choices others have made, that I have no control over. Is it logical to think that a loving Heavenly Father would all of the sudden abandon me, when he has never done so before?  In the sacred grove the young Prophet Joseph Smith was over come by the power of the advisory to the point of despair and to abandon himself to destruction. But "just at this moment of great alarm, he saw a pillar of light exactly over his head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon him." He was not abandoned - on the contrary, after these feeling of total despair, occurred one of the greatest events in history.   This vision not only changed his life, but the lives of every soul that has lived since - the ushering in of the dispensation of the fullness of times. No longer were the heavens closed - the restoration of the gospel, it's priesthood, authority and the continual revelation through a living prophet of God had began. Just think what excitement and celebration should have transpired at the news that such an event. I'm sure that is what happened in the heavens. But in up-state New York, these events were met with ridicule, persecution and the desire to take his life. In his own words the Prophet Joseph Smith stated: It caused me serious reflection then, and often has since, how very strange it was that an obscure boy, of a little over fourteen years of age, and one, too, who was doomed to the necessity of obtaining a scanty maintenance by his daily labor, should be thought a character of sufficient importance to attract the attention of the great ones of the most popular sects of the day, and in a manner to create in them a spirit of the most bitter persecution and reviling. But strange or not, so it was, and it was often the cause of great sorrow to myself. However, it was nevertheless a fact that I had beheld a vision.....  I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; ( end quote) I don't know if all of you can think of someone that is  fourteen years of age - perhaps one of the young men preparing the sacrament in your ward. The only way he could have gotten through such a trial would be to have heavenly assistance.   Unlike the Prophet Joseph Smith, I have not seen a vision or heard a voice from heaven. I have not seen the resurrected Savior, but I have had many opportunities to receive manifestations or witnesses from the Holy Ghost that he lives, that the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ has in reality happened and that there are living Prophets and Apostles on the earth.  These manifestations have been so strong that it would be impossible to deny them without offending God. No my experiences would not be classified as a sure witness - I still need to exercise faith, but that faith grows stronger with each manifestation of the spirit. As we seek such experiences  - through our faithfulness, dedication and asking for truth and strength through prayer, we too can receive the perfect knowledge and eventually the eternal life and exaltation promised to all true followers of Christ. But, the process of getting there can be difficult - some of us have been discouraged, depressed and just feel tired.  Many have considered giving up or have allowed the advisory to convince them that it's just not worth it, or WORSE yet, that it's really not that important. Others lie to themselves or justify their actions because everyone else is doing it. This doesn't change the reality or truth of the gospel and the consequences of our disobedience. I understand that I'm talking at a meeting that normally the most faithful members of our stake attend.  But some of the greatest followers of Christ in the scriptures have had their times of discouragement and even times they weren't as faithful as they should have been. Did the Brother of Jared really stop praying to the Lord? Or instead did he just start praying like I do sometimes, going through the motions with a lack of sincerity and not truly seeking individual guidance - that three hour interview where he was chastened must have been a wonderful bitter-sweat experience. Both Alma the Elder and the Younger had their times of difficulty. The Prophet Joseph Smith was so discouraged in the Liberty Jail that he pled - Oh God, where art thou? Everyone of us in this room have had such experiences. All of us have also had time's where we have been closer than normal to the promptings of the Spirit. Alma's speaking to the saints in Zarahemla asked an important question: "And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?" Where are each of us in our progression? What areas of concern is the spirit telling us we need to work on? I remember getting the impression that I needed to work harder at my relationship with my wife - after telling her I had that impression, there were a number or events that made things momentarily even harder. In its small way this is similar to advisory trying to stop Joseph Smiths first prayer? Hopefully she can continue to forgive me for my shortcomings.   This years theme for the Young Men and Women of the church is taken from D&C 115:5: "Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations;" This is a challenge to be a little better - to live more in accordance with the Saviors teachings, to fulfill the covenants we have already made. In our last General Conference - Elder Hallstrom talked about the difference of being active in the church and active in the gospel. He stated - "Some have come to think of activity in the Church as the ultimate goal. Therein lies a danger. It is possible to be active in the Church and less active in the gospel. Let me stress: activity in the Church is a highly desirable goal; however, it is insufficient. Activity in the Church is an outward indication of our spiritual desire. If we attend our meetings, hold and fulfill Church responsibilities, and serve others, it is publicly observed. By contrast, the things of the gospel are usually less visible and more difficult to measure, but they are of greater eternal importance. For example, how much faith do we really have? How repentant are we? How meaningful are the ordinances in our lives? How focused are we on our covenants? " (end quote) The fact that you are here this evening is a wonderful thing - but is that sufficient? We need to implement the principles and prompting of the spirit. The other night I had a wonderful conversation with some dear friends that haven't been outwardly active in the church for years. But, as we met it was obvious that they are more active in the gospel than many that I see at church on a consistent basis. Some less active or members of other faiths have a hard time with supposedly active members of the church that are not honest in their dealings, or do not treat others with kindness or respect.  Those that are truly dedicated to the gospel of Christ - want to be like Him, he didn't turn away the beggar - He sat with and loved the sinner, despite their weaknesses. Those that are like the Savior are humble, submissive to the promptings of the spirit, have charity and let virtue garnish their thoughts unceasingly. These are attributes of true followers of Christ.  To my friends I would also like to add - that these Christ like qualities, when obtained, also cause us to have the desires to make covenants and promises with the Lord - which takes place with the priesthood and in sacrament meeting and in the temples of God.  Alma's question then takes on even great significance - have we felt the song of redeeming love, do we have a relationship with the Savior, have we made the Atonement effective in our lives. If we have - are we doing so now.  President Uchtdorf also addressed this issue as he talked about what real growth in the gospel.   "Real growth in the gospel of Jesus Christ are those that we can't measure as easily, such as daily prayer, scripture study, family home evening, love at home and for our neighbors, and personal experiences with Christ's Atonement. These are recorded not by a clerk in Church records but in our hearts and in heaven." (end quote) This true growth, true dedication to the gospel and to the Savior teaching - is the formula that changes lives. This testimony and dedication leads us to action - not only to raise ourselves, but also all those around us. As the storms increase around us - only those that have a firm foundation will survive. We need to focus on the principle and actions of the gospel.  Now is the time that the Lord needs each of us to be the type of saints that he can depend on, to be the pillars that others can lean on and ask for assistance. What a great opportunity we have to be here tonight and tomorrow morning - to be instructed by those that have been called and set apart to represent the Savior Jesus Christ. Let's make a resolve to evaluate our lives and to covenant once again to make the necessary changes in order to receive the manifestations of the spirit. 

Stake Conf -2/5/2012 Sunday Morning, Primary Children, Who you are.

Good morning brothers and sisters, it's great to see you all here, especially the primary children.

Today I would like to speak to the young people in the audience. King Benjamin in Mosiah chapter 3, said we needed to humble ourselves and become as little children! Now, I've been reminded many times, this means we should be child like - not childish. So if we follow this counsel, each of us should be able to listen in as well.

I know it's hard to believe, but I remember when I was your age. When I was a kid we would come to this same tabernacle for stake conference. I loved this building, I would sit in the windows in the balcony, today those benches are a little harder than the rest of the seats, but, back then they were all the same, as none of the rows or benches had cushions. They didn't broadcast the session to another building, that wasn't possible. In those days we had four stake conferences a year and we always had a general authority in attendance. I remember seeing a number of members of the quorum of the twelve and other great speakers.

I don't remember what they all looked like - I'm sure some of them were old - bald - fat guys like me. I don't remember exactly what they all said, but I remember how I felt when I heard them speak. You wont remember all that is said here today, but I want all of you to try to pay attention and ask Heavenly Father to help you feel the power of the Holy Ghost, to know that what is being said is true, that God lives and He loves you.

I know that I was still in primary when I heard President Benson - before he became the President of the church. I remember he held the podium on both sides and in his strong loud voice bore testimony that God lives and Jesus is the Christ, and Savior of the world. I'm sure I remember him a little more because he grew up in Cache Valley and his wife was from my home ward.

A few years later when I was a young man - President Monson, our current Prophet - then a member of the twelve, came and called one of my hero's from my ward as our new Stake Patriarch. This is the same man that gave me my Patriarchal Blessing. That revelation has been a blue print or guide for me, most of my life. It's a personal revelation just for me and the challenges I'm going through. There are very few months that go by that I don't read it. It is a strength, and has given me hope during the difficult times. But even with this I have made mistakes or done things that haven't turned out like they should.

Now some of you young people might wounded if God really knows you or cares what is going on in your lives. I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable, but just over a month ago members from two different families in our stake went through a scary but amazing experience. The car they were traveling in went off the road in Logan Canyon and into the river, the events that followed were nothing short of miraculous - instantly individuals willingly sprang into action, not thinking of possible consequences, these earthly angels received heavenly assistance - it isn't an coincidence that the right people were on the seen so quickly.

These primary children - went through one of the most difficult situations possible - but their families are amazed at the number of blessings they have received. There is no doubt that they received assistance from a Loving Heavenly Father. The many miracles that transpired are a testimony of the love and knowledge of their existence to our loving Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ.

The circumstances and unsought attention have been difficult for them to accept or understand - but we continue to pray for their recovery and well being. Thankfully the majority of us will not be asked to endure such an event, but God is just as aware or concerned about each of our lives and is willing to give us the assistance we may need.

No matter your age - the Lord is aware of your circumstances and will help you to know what is right. He will help you to know that he is there and will give you a testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel. No matter what you do, don't give up, or think God will abandon you.

Last Sunday night, I attended a fireside at USU where Elder Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve talked about the Prophet Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith was only 14 year of age when he entered the sacred grove and God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him.

Elder Holland said: "The Lord starts early (in someone's life) if they allow him to." One of the most spiritual experiences in my life happened when I was 12 years old as I entered that same sacred grove, I receive a manifestation that the Church is true. That manifestation has influenced my life ever since that day. The interesting part is that I knew what the spirit felt like when it came - so I had felt it for years before in primary and at home.

Sadly, this ability to influence the youth of the church is also known by Satan as well. At an earlier and earlier age, he is trying to destroy the innocence and purity of Gods children. Pornography is flooding the earth, Satan is even using cartoons to spread this filth. The question isn't if we will see these things - but when! The next question is what or how will we react when they enter our lives and the lives of our children.

I have related before an example of someone dear to me that has lost everything - his family, profession, and membership in the church because of this addiction. It started at the age of nine - when he and a friend found a video at his friends house, these people were supposedly active members of the church. Those images have never left his recollection, and have caused him to seek other harmful avenues to satisfy these carnal desires. Parents and adults - why would we ever allow these things to enter our homes in any form. President Hinckley called it a plague - would you knowingly bring a deadly virus home to infect your family?

You young people - and also you older people - never view these images or bad pictures, run from them, don't surf the web without your parents knowing which sites your looking at. If you come across something that makes you feel uncomfortable - shut it off and never go back. The Holy Ghost will help you understand what is good or bad.

Satan has given us other lies. Never use tobacco or alcohol. Modern Prophets have also told us this includes any type of addictive drug. Some Doctors and scientist have even gone as far as to say things like marijuana aren't bad for you and should be legalized - this is a lie. How do I know it's a lie? Because someone that knows far more than any of us - God the Father and His son Jesus Christ have told us it is a lie through their Prophets. These substances are addictive and will dull your spiritual senses - making it harder, or impossible to have the influence of the Holy Ghost in your life. Didn't at one time these supposed intellectuals tell the people that the world was flat?

Make the decision today - never to use these things! True happiness and joy can only come through obedience to the laws God has given us. Parents and grandparents - make these things topics of conversation individually with your children and grandchildren - this should also be a topic for family home evening as well. We should be having these conversations a lot sooner than perhaps we have ever realized.

Now I don't want to spend anymore time talking about the bad things that are around you. Because there are so many that are good. There is a song that each of you have song hundreds of times during your short lives. It's - "I am a child of God." There are no truer words written in song - I testify, that you are literally a child of God. Not only does he know you - but you have a personal relationship with him. When we see him again you will recognize him and remember the love he has for you. He has sent you to this earth to receive a physical body, he has given you a home, parents, friends and church leaders that love you and will guide and direct you. While we are here on the earth, we need to gain faith and testimonies, and to receive the ordinances that allow us to return to live with Him eternally.

All of the other things or desires that you may have, such as being popular, rich, or famous are not important - in reality if we put them before the things of God, they will be detrimental to your eternal progression and happiness. As we do the things He asks us to do - He will help us to understand what is important. Indeed, He has given us great blessings and opportunities.

Brothers and sisters, we have each came to this earth with unique personalities and talents. The training of our parents, our experiences and the decisions we make along the way, can enhance these God given characteristics and helps us to gain more talents and abilities. We have been told that we were sent to this earth to be tried, tested, and prove that we will be obedient and faithful no matter what the situations we are placed under. All of us will make mistakes - thats OK, just make sure you try to make them better. These experiences, good and bad, change our outlook, abilities, and personality. Remember that you are wonderful and are a child of God, which means you have a lot of potential.

When we came to this earth we have earthly parents. For the most part they do a wonderful job. Help your parents out, smile, be happy and know that they love you. Physically we inherit certain characteristics passed down through our parents. Some of these characteristics, good and bad, dictate what you look like and some of the health concerns that you may face. Some of us are short, some are tall, some of us don't have hair. Don't be as concerned with what you look like on the outside, be more concerned with what you act like and what you are inside. Look at the positives - you know I don't have to spend anytime each day combing my hair.

Just like we inherit characteristics from our earthly parents, we inherit spiritual characteristics and abilities from our Heavenly parents. When we act on them, we become more like Him. This allows us to return to live in His presence. Because he wants us to return to live with him, he has sent our older brother Jesus Christ to show us how to make it back. We need to remember he is our brother and loves us. We need to read his teachings, counsel and guidance. We do this as we read the scriptures, tell your parents tonight that you want to read the scriptures together as a family. Our father and brother wants to hear from us, we do this as we pray. Tell them how much you love them, thank them for what they have done for you. Pray to them more than one time a day - pray individually and as a family.

Stake Conf. Sat Evening 2/4/2012, Hearts of Fathers

A few weeks ago I had a wonderful experience. All of you know the Stake Presidency and High Counsel on the third Sunday, attend and speak in each ward. As members of the Stake Presidency we do not speak as often as the High Counsel, so there are a few ward's I haven't spoken to in years. Accompanying the stake representative is a recently returned missionary.

The missionary assigned to me that day was my son, who had recently returned from his mission in Argentina. The change that comes over these young men and women during their missions is amazing. These young people leave as boys and girls and come home as powerful servants of God. So the normally wonderful experience, was enhanced by the love and excitement of being with my son. I told the congregation that I anticipated that he would use a certain scripture - 1 Nephi 1:1 - adding his own name in the verse to give it more meaning.

"I (Spencer) having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father."

Now, I was kidding when I brought it up - but, I do hope that this is one of the things he feels he could say. I remember as I was preparing my remarks, I searched the scriptures looking for verses that had to do with the love or an association of a parent and their child.

My favorite one I found was in the beginning of Mormon's epistle to his son Moroni given in Moroni 8: 2-3.

"My beloved son, Moroni, I rejoice exceedingly that your Lord Jesus Christ hath been mindful of you, and hath called you to his ministry, and to his holy work."

"I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child, Jesus, that he, through his infinite goodness and grace, will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end."

Every loving parent would hope and pray that God would keep and support their children. Their salvation and progression is / or should be our top priority. We all get excited when our loved ones are worthy and used by the Lord to future his kingdom.

These feeling aren't just for our children - but they are also for our parents and extended families, and they for us. One of the greatest mysteries of the gospel to the world is that these relationships and concerns reach beyond the vail and are eternal in nature.

When is the last time / or have you ever stopped to personalize the existence of your ancestors. Your greater grand parents first kiss - the love they had for their children. The heart ache of losing one of their children. These shouldn't just be names on a sheet of paper - they are individuals that danced, sang and hopefully enjoyed life and the love of their family. I don't know if they thought much about us - but if they did they wanted us to be happy and have the things we need. I'm sure they also want these family relationships to continue and grow into the eternities. This can only do done in the temples of God, which most of our Ancestors didn't have an opportunity to attend.

I read a quote the other day from President Hinckley that made me think a little differently about how significant temple work and redeeming the dead should be. He pointed out that the words of the Prophet Malachi forecasting the coming of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers, was given multiple time to the Prophet Joseph Smith, long before he received the golden plates, before he received the priesthood, was baptized or even the church of Jesus Christ was organized. That night and morning as the angel Moroni appeared to the young prophet four times - each time he recited this declaration. Quoting it slightly different than what is printed in the King James Bible. Indeed this message was so important to the restoration of the gospel and the salvation of all mankind that it needed to be given in a method that would not be forgotten.

One might ask what this statement means?

"To turn the hearts" In a recent church publication it states - "(It) means that individuals and families feel a spiritual awakening as they serve their deceased relatives and experience the joy of being active participants in a fundamental part of Heavenly Father's plan of salvation. Participation in temple and family history work touches the soul as the Holy Ghost bears witness to the eternal nature of families."

On April 3, 1836, the Prophet Elijah appeared in the Kirtland Temple and restored the keys of the sealing power, fulfilling the prophecy that had been given. Enabling families to be sealed together forever. "Whatsoever is bound on earth would be bound in heaven."

This made it possible for that eternal nature to be completed. Families to be together forever.

Elder Russell M Nelson - stated.

" Elijah came to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to the fathers. With that, natural affection between generations began to be enriched. This restoration was accomplished by what is sometimes called the Spirit of Elijah -- a manifestation of the Holy Ghost bearing witness of the divine nature of the family."

I believe it is important to point out that the Spirit of Elijah - is in reality a manifestation of the Holy Ghost. The mission of the Holy Ghost is to bear witness of the the Father and His Son Jesus Christ - and the importance of their gospel and teachings. The Spirit of Elijah brings with it an increased desire to redeem those that haven't had the opportunity to receive the blessings of the gospel. There's a joy and excitements that comes through these experiences. Those of us that have participated in finding and redeeming the dead cherish those experiences and the spirit that accompanies it.

President Thomas S Monson -

"In my own family, some of our most sacred and treasured experiences have occurred when we have joined together in the temple to preform sealing ordinances for our deceased ancestors.... The all-important and crowning blessings of membership in the church are those blessings which we receive in the temples of God."

In our stake conference last October I spoke of some of my ancestors that I was able to find and take to the temple. In November, a month later - the day after our son returned from his mission, we as a family went to the temple and preformed the baptisms and confirmations for a 100 individuals. All nine of our immediate family members were there to participate. Our son who had been away for two years was able to baptize his sisters and mother for individuals that hadn't had the opportunity in this life to receive these wonderful blessings. I was then able to performed the confirmations. Like President Monson this has become one of my most sacred treasured experiences.

The events surrounding the process of finding and performing the ordinances of salvation for my ancestors have been immeasurable. The Spirit of Elijah had changed my being - whom and what I am. On multiple occasions I have found names - seemingly by accident that weren't there just a short time before. I've had impressions that names belonged to a certain family, when everything on the screen seemed to shows otherwise, only to link those names together a short time later. Perhaps the most miraculous part of this experience, is that just six months ago I sat in a training meeting given by Elder Bednar, where he talked about our participation in this great work of redeeming the dead. I thought how I had never found an individual to take to the temple - the spirit bore witness to me that I needed to change that.

Now as a family, we have found 100's of names and preformed 100's of ordinances. A few months ago my wife and I went to the temple for our ward temple night. Another couple convinced us to skip the session and do some sealing. None of the names being sealed that night were ones that I had found. What took place in that sealing room is perhaps the most spiritual experience I have had during this process - I was overcome with the spirit, I felt the presence of my ancestors - those whom's names I have been working on. The message was extremely clear - this was their ultimate goal, to be sealed together as families. Tears filled my eyes and I literally started to quiver. Lori sat next to me and asked what was wrong. I relayed to her some of what I was feeling. I was allowed to feel their presence - even though none of their names were being done that night. What a wonderful tender experience this was. These feelings have helped me to continue to accomplish this work.

Brothers and sisters, it takes time to do the temple work for so many individuals. But in the next few week we as a family will go to the temple and start the final ordinances for those first names - the binding of individuals and families for eternity. I envision - maybe a bit selfishly, all of those spirits - that were connected on earth, will be there to be bound together eternally. Perhaps my deceased parents will be allowed to join in - maybe these are some of the individuals that they have been teaching in the spirit world. Perhaps they may say, it's about time - Paul got this done.

Brothers and sisters I have had some extremely strong impressions why I have had so much success in this area. First, that my ancestors have accepted the gospel and are excited to partake of the blessings and ordinances necessary for their eternal salvation. Second it has been a tender mercy and testimony builder in my life that I have so desperately needed. The amount of revelation and personal inspiration is one of the strongest I have ever experienced. I still have many areas of growth that need to take place. But my testimony of the existence of a loving Father and the Savior Jesus Christ are as strong as they have ever been. And lastly, I have felt an increased responsibility to inspire and testify to the members of this wonderful stake and my extended family the importance of this great work. There are millions of spirits anxiously awaiting their opportunity to partake of these blessings. Many of which have connections to each of us in this room. If your having a hard time finding a name to take to the temple - keep trying, our ancestors know where their records are and will help you find them. But still continue to go to the temple to do the works for the names that are already there. If you don't hold a current temple recommend or have never been to the temple - don't wait another moment to do the things necessary to make these blessing part of your life.

7th Ward -Coming unto Christ

Brothers and sisters - we are told to liken the scriptures unto our selfs. I thought that my son may use -

1 Nephi 1:1

I (Spencer) having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all of the learning of my father.

That would have been great - but perhaps a more realistic scripture would be in -

Alma 56: 47-48 (speaking of the stripping warriors).

....they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.

And they rehearsed unto me all the words of their mothers, saying: we do not doubt that our mothers knew it.

I heard a talk once wondering why they didn't mention their fathers - if you recall these young me came from the Lamanites - whom covenanted not to take up arm against their breathers. At their first encounter - hundred of these men were killed without fighting back. Many of these young very likely grew up in single parent homes. Mothers testifying to the of the truthfulness of the gospel.

Indeed the poet William Wallace's words - "The hand that rocks the cradle, is the hand that rules the world." Is true.

This isn't the setting to debate why I think my son had a successful mission - or understands the workings of the spirit in his life up to this point.

But it is a place to discuss what brings us to / or allows us to receive the spirit as a constant companion in our lives. To come unto the Savior and receive the promised blessings of the gospel.

All of us have heard hundreds of analogies or examples of what we need to do in order to have and keep the spirit. Being somewhat simple minded I can sort of understand how a radio or cell phone works - apparently there are hundreds if not thousands of sound waves all around us. Despite everyone of us in the room having a phone - mine will only ring when the proper steps are taken. We need to fine tune our receiver to pick up the message that is being given. When we tune in to the possible choices - like in our car, there are both good and bad choices that we can listen to. If we do not follow the proper steps, or our receivers are broken or just if we fell to turn to the proper frequency - the spirit will not, or better yet - can't abide with us.

I would suggest that there are three basis steps of categories to receiving the spirit and Coming unto the Savior.

The first step in receive this wonderful gift is the desire to have it as part of our lives. "Ask and ye shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto you." This may seem simple or even a bit odd - because who wouldn't want to have the spirit in their lives or be close to the Savior?

In section 121 of the D&C the Savior talked about those that are not chosen because their hearts are set so much on the things of the world and aspire to the honors of men. Brothers and sisters, is there anything that we knowingly or perhaps even unconsciously choosing that takes precedence over our desires of having the spirit - these people have not learned or can't understand that certain steps need to be taken in order to receive the promised blessings. If we truly have the desire to be close to the spirit - it will happen (period).

This then focuses the solution or problem directly back to the question - how strong is your personal desires to come unto Christ?

The rest of the verse in section 121 bring up the second step to receiving the spirit and Coming unto Christ. "The power of heaven can not be controlled or handle, only upon the principles of righteousness." Brother and Sisters we need to be righteous and obedient to Gods commands. The spirit can not dwell in an unrighteous setting. It may be able to bare witness or guide us in a direction of truth or show us some of the things we need to change. "But when we undertake to cover our sins, or to gratify our pride, our vane ambition, or to exercise control, or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any degree of unrighteousness, behold the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man."

It then tells us that anyone in this condition is left unto themselves - left without the spirit.

The third step that I would like to discuss is that we need to continually add fuel to our fires - so to speak. We need to make sure that we are continuing to learn, serve and come closer to the Savior through personal prayer, scripture study and revelation.. When someone fails to feed their testimonies - complacency, idealess, apathy enters the heart - effecting their desires to come unto the Savior and opening the doors of sin.

I had the opportunity to attend a meeting the other day where they talked about some of the reason certain youth have left the church or have become less active - the second largest group that has fallen away from the church is that of return missionaries. This makes no logical sense to me. They told us that these young people are so involved in study, prayer and doing good for others - that when they get home, there seem to be a void - a let down of sorts. The worries of the world, the honors of men begin to creek in and become more important. Satan sees this as a perfect opportunity to instill doubt, discouragement which allowing the carnal desires of sin to take root. There is no greater counsel than The Lord's warning to watch and pray always - lest we enter into temptation.

It doesn't matter what stage of life we are in - if we fail to have a constant flow of spiritual knowledge and experience in our lives - that space will be replaced with the suggestions or teaching of Satan.

Some people seemingly have a hard time reading the scriptures on a continual basis - (two of my prized possession).
